I’m Morgan Fenn, an author of Hi‑Lo books who writes stories and resources to support struggling teen readers. My books are considered Hi-Lo: they explore meaningful ideas and themes that are interesting for older readers while using vocabulary and structure that are easier to follow. My goal is to foster a love for reading by giving every student stories that are exciting, manageable, and rewarding to finish.
I live in Nanaimo, Canada, where I enjoy the outdoors, traveling, learning about new cultures, and reading. These experiences inspire my writing and remind me that adventures can be found everywhere, both on the page and in everyday life.
My Story
As an educator specializing in literacy and an author of hi-lo books, I have spent years watching too many kids fall between the cracks. Around grade six, I often see students still reading at a grade 3 or 4 level, and this mismatch becomes a turning point. The books that are typically written for teens are long, filled with imaginary vocabulary and complex plots. Reading shifts from being enjoyable to being overwhelming, and students begin to see it as a chore. The books they can manage feel too young, which affects their confidence, leading to frustration, low self-esteem, and eventually a downward spiral where they remain stuck at the same level.
Struggles with reading ripple outward into every subject such as science, social studies, English, and even math. These challenges hold students back both academically and emotionally. Over and over, I’ve seen reluctant readers who felt discouraged, teased, and disconnected from learning.
As an author of Hi‑Lo books, my stories are written for teens who are reluctant readers. My books have relatable characters and compelling topics, but they are written at a grade 3.5–4 reading level. Short chapters and manageable length help students finish a book and feel proud, sparking excitement for the next one. The Amiverse Chronicles is just the beginning of this heartfelt project, with many more adventures to come.
The Reading Success Collection
The Amiverse Chronicles is just the beginning. As an author of hi-lo books, I will be releasing new stories and resources each month, offering fast-paced adventures in genres such as fantasy and action, written at a grade 3.5 to 4 reading level.
The Amiverse Chronicles
Scorched, Book One of the Amiverse Chronicles, is being released in November 2025. Then over the following two months, book two and book three will be released.
Adventure and Fantasy Series
New fantasy and adventure books are on the way. Written at the grade 3.5–4 level, these stories are designed for students ages 10–15, combining engaging plots with accessible reading to build both excitement and confidence.
Student Reading Guide
Each book will include a student reading guide featuring comprehension questions and a word study section designed to keep readers engaged and to support their understanding of the story.
Reading Comprehension Books
A series of reading comprehension books will be developed at a grade 3.5 level. These books will feature themes and topics that reflect the interests of students ages 10–15, providing engaging, age‑appropriate content while building essential reading skills.
